Is my home suitable for solar PV? |
|
Most homes in the UK are suitable for a solar PV electricity system. There are 3 main criteria to consider:
Which way does your home face?
A south facing roof will see the most sunlight and, therefore, generally be most efficient. However, solar PV panels can still be very effective when your roof faces east or west.
The pitch of the roof
The angle or pitch of your roof can affect the amount of sunlight it receives during the day and, therefore, the amount of energy that can be generated. However, systems can be installed from horizontal through to fully vertical. The ideal angle in the UK is approximately 30 degrees. Most domestic roofs are between 25 to 45 degrees. Solar panels can also be installed on flat roofs with the use of specially designed brackets.
Shading
The amount of shading your roof receives has an impact on the amount of electricity that can be generated from the solar PV panels. Shading can come from other properties, trees, chimneys, wires etc.
