When exposed to sunlight, the solar PV panels produce a direct current (DC) which is converted to alternating current (AC) by an inverter situated in your loft.  This then feeds through to a meter which monitors the amount of electricity the panels produce which is fed into the consumer unit so that it can be used in your home by your household appliances.  Any surplus electricity is returned to The Grid.
